    • Grjotgard was earl of Hålogaland "country of the tall flames", the name of the geographic area, north of Trøndelag and far past the arctic circle, where the midnight sun gave the impression of a flamming horizon. It is not known when he was born, but he is likely close to the same age as Halvdan Svarte, or perhaps a little older. He probably in Malangen in the north part of Troms, but he had an interest in certain transportation routes southward as an offensive against Vikings. This forced him to move southward to Ørlandet. Near Agdenes he was killed by a berserk. In Viking times a "beserk" was one who seemed to come under some sort of wild frenzy during a battle and would be almost invincible. The enemy certainly were afraid of any Viking beserk. Grjotgard's had inffluence between his base of furrier between the north and continental Europe. He paid taxes to others to protect his traders against robbers. The name on his wife is not known, but he had some sons.
